Consultation with a faculty or school academic staff member in the research area of interest is recommended prior to submission of an application.

General

Length: three pages is often suitable, depending on the area of research.
Detail: Each of the areas listed below may not apply to your particular research at this stage
although they could be considered when developing your proposal.
Minimum: The recommended minimum requirements are identified with an asterisk (*).

Applicant name: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
University of Newcastle Academic contact/ Prospective Supervisor: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

List your project aims in a logical sequence, ie:
The aim of this project is to:
a) Provide an outline of a research proposal
b) Enable a prospective student to prepare a research proposal

*Methodology
*How do you anticipate you will achieve these aims?
What do you need? (specify any special equipment, software or material)
Can you access necessary data or expertise?
*Do you require particular resources?
Are there barriers or pitfalls?
Does the project involve human ethics, animal ethics or safety implications?

Research proposal
A statement outlining the proposed area of research must be attached to the application form. A single page statement is sufficient providing it defines the chosen area of study, details the aims of the proposed research program and provides an indication of the approach to the research the applicant wishes to take. A template is available in the other attached word file.
Sufficient detail is required to enable the Faculty to determine that it has the resources, including suitably experienced supervision personnel, to support the candidature. Applicants are encouraged to research the University’s research expertise (by using the Web)
If you discuss your proposal with a potential supervisor, please provide their name.
THE FOLLOWING IS A GUIDE TO WRITING A RESEARCH PROPOSAL.
It should be noted that research proposals for some areas may require specific information pertaining to the area involved. This example is included as a guide only and consultation with a faculty member in the area of interest is recommended prior to submission.
Please refer to the areas of research section in the prospectus for lists of academic contacts. It is acceptable and advisable to email a draft outline of your proposal for advice to the School Research Convenor, or the academic contact for the area of interest, prior to submitting your formal application.
A proposal for a research project should contain the following
elements:
Length: three pages is often suitable, depending on the area of research.
Detail: Not all of the areas listed below may apply to your particular research at this stage. However, each area could be considered when developing your proposal.
Minimum: The recommended minimum requirements are identified with an asterisk (*).
*Research Topic/Title
The initial working title should primarily be descriptive of both the content and direction of your project. Some examples might be:
“Influence of Bio-technological Images and Ideas in Contemporary Korean Advertising – a studio investigation”; “Lactobacilli from fermented foods: Risk factors for the elderly”.
If you intend to complete an historical survey of data, be sure to delimit the scope with dates if necessary. For example: “The effects of migratory birds on rural farming (1850 – 1950)”. Avoid impossibly broad topics or descriptors such as “The Forces of Nature” or “Colour in Painting”.
Brief project description
[About a half-page to one and a half pages in length] Include information on:
Background
What is already known or unknown in your area of interest?
*The Aim or Objectives of your project
The primary aim of your research will generally be an examination or investigation of the thematic, theoretical or technical issue described in your title. To reach some point of resolution or understanding of the topic, or indeed solution to a problem if appropriate, you will need clear objectives. The obvious way to highlight key objectives is to ask yourself the questions “What do
I want to: show, prove, demonstrate, understand, analyse, reveal or explain with this project?”
Usually there will be several related answers. For example, if your aim was to investigate the influence of digital technology in advertising, your objectives would involve demonstrating the
influence of new technology on current approaches and proving the significance of that impact, and, possibly the implications of such influence.
*The Focus/Methodology of your research – studio/classroom-based, historical research, theoretical investigation, industry-based or applied research.
Be sure to stipulate how your research project is to be conducted, for example, in a laboratory or a purely theoretical investigation. Since some modes of investigation fall within the broad category of qualitative research it is important to note if alternative quantitative approaches such as statistical analysis are to be used.
How do you anticipate you will achieve these aims?
What do you need? (specify any special equipment, software or material)
Can you access necessary data or expertise?
Do you require particular resources?
Are there barriers or pitfalls?
Does the project involve human ethics, animal ethics or safety implications? (If so, your project will be subject to the approval by the relevant University of Newcastle Committee.)
Is travel or fieldwork required? If so: where to, how long and at what intervals?
The Scope or Dimension of the Outcome – written thesis, exhibition of works of art, DVD or multimedia presentation, performance, community project, public art project, industrybased or applied research.
Here again, the usual expectation is the production of a significant body of writing. The usual expectation is about 40,000 words for a master and 60,000 to 80,000 words for a PhD.
Expected outcomes, significance or rationale for the project [Maximum of half a page in length]
Here you must establish the importance of your project by showing that it is original and is worth pursuing. Stress the external benefits of your project, highlighting any potential new social insight, understanding, interpretation or, if applicable, saleable knowledge or innovative technical or industry application.
*Timetable/Data/Methodology
[Restrict this to one page maximum plus a working bibliography or reading list]
The goal here is to demonstrate the steps you will take to achieve your research plan within a realistic timeframe. Show also that data is available to complete your investigation (usually the reading list is sufficient). Also in this section you should specify any special equipment, software or material you will need the University of Newcastle to supply to complete your project. That is, any resources outside the usual expectation for a researcher in a particular workshop discipline.
Your timetable might stipulate broad stages, for example:
I will start my Phd from 2012……
Phase One –extensive literature survey and data collection.
Library and database searches along with field work such as on-site location visits.
Phase Two – production of pilot or exploratory work
Phase Three – analysis of research in relation to collected data
Phase Four – final production of thesis
Phase Five – presentation of thesis for review
Indicate the timeframe for each broad stage considering literature surveys, data collection, production, modelling, review, analysis, testing, reporting, chapter and thesis writing, and thesis submission date.
The length of each phase would vary according to the level of research but for a masters, study Phase One, Two and Three would overlap but generally occupy the first twelve months of candidature. Phase Four would encompass the second year.
When your Research Proposal is complete, this is attached to the Application Form, along with a copy of your CV. You will also be required to supply a list of your formal academic record with qualifications and transcripts of achievements, as well as your research experience/publications.
