Employment Relations

Assessment task 1: Research Essay and annotated reference list
Word limit: This essay must be no longer than 1500 words (including any references cited in your assignment). The overall assignment should be no longer than 2500 words (including references).
Value: 25% (Essay 15%, Annotated references10%)
Criteria for marking: Available on Blackboard
Details of task:
This is an individual assignment. You must write an essay addressing the following question: Inequality has increased as the Australian employment relations system has become more unitarist, Discuss.
In addition, you must include an annotated reference list. From your essay’s reference list, you must select the five (5) most important references and write a short paragraph explaining their contribution to your essay.
In order to complete this task satisfactorily you must follow a number of steps. These are: 1. Topic Analysis. Carefully analyse the topic and identify key concepts. These will guide the next step. 2. Library Research. In your research of the topic we expect that you will draw on at least five (5) academic references from journals, readings listed on Blackboard as well as articles that can be obtained using the Monash Library databases such as ABI Inform, Expanded Academic ASAP or IREL (Australian Industrial Relations Database). Research articles report studies that are qualitative (e.g. a case study or interview research) or quantitative (e.g. statistical data). The journals listed in this Unit Outline provide examples of typical sources for research articles. A brief non-academic article of 1 to 2 pages long is very unlikely to have the depth of analysis expected for your essay. Similarly, reliance on textbook material is also unadvisable as it is unlikely to provide the depth of analysis expected for your essay. HRM textbooks may be used as supplements to research articles, but are not a substitute for them. 3. Check the assessment criteria. Before beginning the writing process, carefully read through the assessment criteria included in the Unit Outline. A marking guide and feedback sheet for this assignment can be downloaded from Blackboard. 4. Develop an argument based on your research. You must then develop a well structured, logical
and cohesive argument based on your research that presents your response to the question(s) 5. Appropriate academic style for the essay. Academic style requires the use of formal language and use of the 3rd person style of expression. Avoid using colloquial (conversational) style and the vernacular (everyday vocabulary). Ensure your essay conforms to the accepted standard of citation using the Harvard System of Referencing. If you are not sure how to write a correctly structured and referenced academic essay please refer to the Faculty Q Manual. Copies of this Manual can be obtained at the bookshop or on line at URL: 6. Before you submit. Check again that your response meets all the criteria listed with the assignment and feedback sheet.
7.Assessment coversheet: Work submitted for assessment MUST be accompanied by a completed and signed assessment coversheet. This can be completed online at the Blackboard site.
