Application of a moral standard would include the use of following (not an exhaustive list, consistent with MGMT 303):

Utilitarian rule – Decision is made in order to produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Managers must consider how decisions would benefit or harm stakeholders and choose the course of action that provides the most benefits and the least harm to stakeholders. Limitation – Often difficult to measure human and social costs. Decision for the majority may disregard or harm rights of the minority.
Moral rights rule – Decision is made in order to maintain and protect the rights and privileges of the people affected by the decision. Attempts to protect peoples’ rights to freedom, life and safety, property, privacy, speech, and thought. Captured by the Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Limitation – Difficult to balance conflicting rights (e.g., individual right to privacy vs. firm’s right to monitor employee communication and honesty).
Justice rule – Decision is made based upon a fair distribution of the benefit or harm. Managers compare alternative courses and take action based on an equitable distribution of benefit or harm. Limitation – Difficult to measure benefits and harm and get agreement about what constitutes a fair distribution.
Practical rule – Decision is made based upon whether or not the manager would feel any hesitation to communicate the decision to society. Sometimes called the “60 Minutes” rule. That is, the decision is made based on how the public would react if the information were broadcast on “60 minutes.”

Other ethics decision-making rules of thumb:

How would I feel if the details of the situation or actions were disclosed to the public?

Would I want children to use my decision and action as an example?

How would I feel if the decision made became a universal law that was applied to all similar situations?

How would I feel if I switched places with one of the key stakeholders in the situation?

Is this the decision a wise, informed, and virtuous person would make?
