Consider the scenarios below. The goal of this section of the paper is to answer the question, what are the life chances of this individual? Mother is occasionally cleaning houses and looking for a full-time job. This family lost their rental home during Hurricane Katrina and is now living in a public housing. Mother receives $100 a month in child support. Scenario #2: White male has learning disability. Born to white married parents living in Manhattan. Mother is homemaker, but has college degree. Son has private tutors to help him with learning disability and attends a private school. 1. What class do you estimate this family to be in? 2. What do you guess this family’s average income is? 3. Imagine that family is planning a move to Syracuse because the mother has found a minimum wage job. Construct a monthly budget by researching the cost of items in the Syracuse area. What is the minimum cost of the following in Syracuse? Since this family does not have much money, try to find ways to be cost effective, yet still safe. Provide your estimates and rationale and come up with a grand total for monthly expenses. You will create a spread sheet with your budget and then analyze and describe your budget and how you came to your numbers in paragraph form (you need both a Chart/Budget and then 2 to 3 paragraph describing your budget! You need to do some research, not just guess about this! 1. Monthly Rent? Look in newspapers and on Craigslist. See what you can get for the money. 2. Monthly cost of food? Look around your grocery stores and estimate what you think it will cost to feed this mother and child, trying to incorporate some healthy options. 3. Utilities? What other costs will this family incur? Think about all of the things we have to have to get by! Be thorough! Part C. Healthcare There are approximately 50 million people in the U.S. that are uninsured and most of those people work full-time.
