Operations Management Presentation

OM : September case requirements :

Project Characteristics

The students will analyze a healthcare system or a subsystem (a hospital, a ward in a hospital, a clinic, an HMO, a health insurance company, a department of a medical insurer, etc.). Then, the students will suggest actions to improve it.

Project Presentation. The students will prepare a Powerpoint presentation along the following outline:

Slide No.1 – System and Subsystem’s Description

Products, services, annual sales, market, clients, employees, organizational structure, competitors, etc.
What is the organization’s goal?
If we analyze a subsystem, what is the subsystem’s goal? How does it correlate to the system’s goal?

Slide No.2 – System’s Goal

Slide No.3 – SWOT Analysis

Draw the major Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats

Slide No.4 – Main Value Drivers

What are the 3 main Value Drivers?
Draw a 6-10 block diagram of the system/subsystem’s main process. For each block, mark the net time and the gross time, and then total gross and net process Response Time.
Draw a Current Reality Tree of the system/subsystem.
Identify the core problems of the system/subsystem.
Identify the system/subsystem constraints: does the system have a resource (internal) constraint or a market (external) constraint? If the constraint is a resource constraint, identify the specific resource that limits the system/subsystem. If the constraint is a market constraint – what hinders the system/subsystem from selling more?
Draw a CUT Diagram of the system/subsystem.
Name at least one “dummy” and one “policy” constraint.
What is the percentage of the ineffective (“garbage”) time of the constraint?
Draw a Pareto chart. Show how to reduce the main causes of the ineffective time.
Show how to break the “dummy” and the policy constraints.

Slide No.5 – Main Process
Slide No. 6 – Current Reality Tree
Slide No.7 – A Resource or a Market Constraint?
Slide No.8 –“Dummy” and “Policy” Constraints
Slide No.9 – Exploitation of the Constraint

Slide No.10 – Strategic Gating

Demonstrate the screening (strategic gating) process using the focusing table and the focusing matrix.

Slide No.11 – Subordination and Tactical Gating

How would you better subordinate the system to the constraint?
Demonstrate the “Tactical Gating” mechanism:
Who should be the gater?
How would a DBR process be conducted?
How would the complete kit concept be introduced?
How would the small batch concept (JIT II) be conducted?
What are the present lot sizes in the system/subsystem?
What would be your suggestions for “transfer” lot sizes?
Describe how to elevate the system/subsystem constraints:
How would you suggest to “offload” the system/subsystem constraint?
Define the “complete kit” of the process – both InKit and OutKit.
What is the current percentage of jobs that enter the system having a “Complete Kit”?
What are the current measures of performance?
Define and assess the current “six performance measures” (T,OE,I,RT,Q,DDP).
Demonstrate the use of GDM in one type of decisions. Use the CUT Diagram and the Measurement Profile.
How does management make such a decision currently?
Map 10 action items to improve the system using the “focusing table”.
Draw the “focusing matrix” and choose the action items to focus on.
Using the “six performance measures” of performance estimate the system/subsystem improvement.

Slide No.12 – Work Packages and Lot Sizes
Slide No.13 – Offloading the Constraint
Slide No.14 – The Complete Kit Concept
Slide No.15 –Measures of Performance
Slide No.16 –GDM (Global Decision Making)
Slide No.17 – 10 Main Action Items to add value to the company

Discussion #1:

A manufacturer of household care products in the U.S. would like to find out how satisfied consumers are with the laundry detergent they are currently using. The information is important because the manufacturer wants to produce a product that satisfies the consumer’s needs.

What sampling technique, listed in Figure 14.4, on page 304 of the Basic Marketing Research textbook, will you recommend for the study? Why? Be specific.
What are other sampling techniques that could be used, if you only had a short period of time and a small budget to complete the study?

Discussion #2:

In the past, the HR department has gathered information from some management trainees, who reported the name of a competitor from which they received another offer and the size of their starting salary. The HR department thinks that these statistics may be biased and wishes to approach the whole task more systematically. Because of your expertise in marketing research practices, you have been assigned to determine the situation with respect to the last group of trainees hired.

Describe how you would select a sample of respondents to answer the question of starting salary offers. Answer from the perspective of both the company and the potential employee.
