Regeneration (10/6) Why do you think this novel is titled Regeneration?

- Regeneration (10/6) Why do you think this novel is titled Regeneration? Does the title signify different things for different characters? What might it mean for Yealland? For Sassoon? Owen? Rivers? Prior?

- Behind the Lines (10/13) Here we’re seeing a dramatic intepretation of a fictional work about a poet’s response to real events (Phew!). Having read a first-person account (Graves), read the poet in question (Sassoon), and read the novel that the movie is based on (Regeneration), how does the film hold up? How does its interpretation of the events differ from your own readings of the source material? What does it leave out? What does it focus on? Is its main focus the same as the novel’s? Why do you think the filmmakers made the choices they made?

- The Return of the Soldier (10/20) Up until this point, we’ve been reading primarily about the experiences of men in the war. Now, we’re looking at the war from a woman’s perspective. How do West’s female characters view the war? Is the war the main issue in this novella? What does the book say about the war? (Remember that this is written in 1916, while the war is still going on, with no end in sight).

- The Waste Land (10/27) The Waste Land was written in the years following the end of the war. Thus, it has the benefit of having had time to reflect on the war-it’s not as immediate an issue as it is for West, or for the poets. How has Eliot incorporated the experience or understanding of the war into his writing? Look at the imagery in particular (the descriptive use of language to create a picture in the reader’s mind). Select one image from the excerpt and analyze it in terms of its response to the war-what feelings does it evoke? What issues does it raise? What specific words are important for understanding the impact of the war on the text?

- Mrs. Dalloway (10/27) Think about the beginning of this excerpt. What is the setting? What is happening? What are the people looking at? Do they agree on what they are seeing? Do you think that Septimus sees the same thing that the other people see? If not, why not? If so, what can you point to in the text to support your argument?

- The Lord of the Rings (11/3) How do you see World War I figuring in the excerpt we’ve read from The Lord of the Rings? How does it compare with the way that Robert Graves or Siegfried Sassoon represent the war? What’s different? What’s similar? Why do you think Tolkien approaches it this way?

- Charley’s War (11/10) How is the war depicted here? How does its depiction compare to Sassoon’s, or Tolkien’s, or Eliot’s? What connections can you make between the art and the storyline/narrative? Is there a “message” in this book-is it taking a pro or anti-war stance, for example-and is the message consistent between the art and the words? (In other words, if you see a politics in the story, is it supported or undercut by the visuals?)

- Oh What a Lovely War (11/17) The play uses popular songs from the time of the First World War, as well as elaborate costumes (known as pierrots) to present its story of the war. What is the importance of the songs to the action? What purpose do they serve in the wider context of the play? How effective is Oh What a Lovely War as a dramatic record of the war? To what extent can it be considered an anti-war play?

- Oh! What a Lovely War (11/24) After seeing parts of the 1969 film version, what are the differences between the film and the stage productions? Does the film carry the same message as the stage version? If so, which do you think is more effective at delivering its message? If not, then what do you think the message of the film is? How does it differ from the play?

- Joyeux Noel (12/5) How does Joyeux Noel “fit in” with the other texts for this class? How can you connect it to any other text in the class? Are there similar themes? Character types? Which text do you think it is most like? The film was made in 2005. Do you see Joyeux Noel using WWI to comment on contemporary (2000s) concerns? If so, which concerns/how does it comment?

- Short Paper

For the paper, you have the option of writing on any of the texts which we have read up to this point. My primary concern for these papers is that they should be arguments, that is, academic in tone, and interested in making a point which can be debated, and which is supported through close textual analysis. Good issues to write on can arise out of class discussion, and I’m happy to help you come up with suggestions as well. The paper should be between 4 and 6 pages, typed, double-spaced, with 12-point font and one-inch margins all around. MLA Style citations and Works Cited should be used. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
