Task description
This individual assessment item provides students with an opportunity to research and critique one Contemporary Nursing issue as identified in an interview with a newly registered nurse graduate in a clinical health setting. Students will use a standard interview guide, provided, to develop a more detailed interview plan. In this essay students will demonstrate their ability to gather information from a number of relevant sources, integrate them and apply theoretical approaches using one Contemporary Nursing issue. The process of undertaking a structured interview with a graduate nurse will facilitate students’ ability to identify and further explore areas of personal interest.

Practical application
Part A – Interview (refer to Structured Interview Guide below)
 Use the Structured Interview Guide provided to develop more detailed and specific interview questions, add these questions to your interview guide to assist you with the interview process.
 During your clinical placement, interview a newly graduated registered nurse (within one year of graduation) using the Structured Interview Guide with your specifically developed questions (which should be attached to your submitted essay).
 Based on information gathered during the interview, identify one contemporary nursing issue that the graduate nurse highlights to discuss in more detail
 Analyse the influence of this issue on nursing practice, nurses and the nursing profession.

Part B – Essay (refer to Essay Marking Criteria below)
 Clearly identify the contemporary nursing issue you have chosen and the pertinent topics surrounding it.
 Discuss the historical, social, political and/or economic factors that have contributed to and/or impact this issue.
 Analyse the impact the issue has on contemporary nursing practice, from a personal, organisational, societal and/or world perspective.
 Identify opinions and recommendations from the literature surrounding the issue.

Essay submission checklist
Present your material in an academic essay style (please refer to style manuals available in the library if you are unsure of an essay format). Ensure that your paper adheres to the following rquirements:

o A marking criteria sheet should be attached to your assignment. Marks will be deducted for failure to include this with your submission.
o Attach completed Structured Interview Guide to the back of the essay, including your detailed interview questions. Marks will be deducted for failure to include this with your submission.
o The assignment is to be stapled in the top left-hand corner. No plastic covers or folders please.
o Attach an assignment cover page to the assignment prior to submission. The cover page should outline your student name, student number, course code, course name, due date, word count, semester and year.
o Ensure an actual word count is also included on the cover page. Your essay may have + or minus 10% (250 words) of the designated word count of 2500 words, not including in-text references. Word counts above 2750 or below 2250 words will be penalised.
o Include a footer with your name and student number and page numbers.
o Use a separate page for references. The reference page is not included in the word count.
o Reference according to APA 6th, which is the standard referencing style for the School. Refer to the course website for details about this (including HERBIE).
o Headings are not part of an academic essay style.
o Bullet points and numbering are part of an academic essay style.
o Double space all assignments, left and right justify, and ensure margins of 3.17cm on the right and left of the page. This makes your essay easier to read and provides room for the markers comments.
o You should provide no less than 15 references to support your essay. References should be mostly peer-reviewed journal articles, published within the last seven years, and it is not acceptable to refer to abstracts alone.
o Font must be Times New Roman or Arial, 12 point.
