You are required to submit an assignment in the form of an academic essay of 3,000 words on the following topic:

Select and analyse 2 major events in British history that you think have dramatically affected the UK. Discuss how these events have affected both British society and also Britain’s international presence.

Justify your selection with reference to the wider literature.

Form

The completed assignment will take the following form:

Title Page: State the unit code, the title of the unit and the full title of your assignment. (This is done for you on the online template.) Do not include your name or student number as a header or footer in your assignment.

Introduction: (200 words) – briefly introduce the topic; include the parameters of the assignment, what you will include and why, what you will not include, and why not. This is especially important when you are selecting just 1-3 historical events so you need to justify why you have chosen these events and not others.

Development: (2,500 words) – develop your assignment, with the most important points first, least important last. Use headings and paragraphing to show new topics / ideas etc. In this section you should discuss the events you have chosen, reflect on what we have covered in class relating to these events and analyse the wider literature to state what impact the events have had on a) British society and b) Britain’s international image/ dealings. Refer to a maximum of 3 events.

Conclusion: (300 words) – summarise the content of your assignment; do not introduce new points / ideas at this stage.

References: – this must include all references in your essay which are to come from a range of sources. At this level around 15 different sources are expected. Referencing throughout your assignment and in this section must use the Harvard system correctly. See ‘Referencing the Harvard Way’ available on myCourse or succeed@solent. ( also available via the links in the unit guidance book tool)

Your essay should cover issues you feel are relevant to the topic, including material covered in the unit, as well as other areas you deem appropriate. You should, where possible, include examples to illustrate your answer.

For the assignment, it is important to plan your work carefully in sections, putting the points in order of importance (important points first). Your assignment should be clear and logical to the reader, and should flow from paragraph to paragraph. You are to demonstrate your skills of analysis of the question. Avoid being descriptive or anecdotal in style. Check that you link the sections of your assignment together carefully.

Set your work out exactly as required, and ensure you check your work for spelling and grammar as your use of English will be assessed in this unit. You must reference as required using the Harvard system. Before submitting your work, make sure you proof read it critically to remove any errors you might have missed earlier.

You are strongly recommended to read the unit descriptor very carefully, especially the Areas of Study and Learning and Teaching Strategy sections, as these clearly state the approach required for your essay, i.e. a piece of academic work examining issues from the UK: International Image and Impact part of this unit, relating them to appropriate research and theories, supporting your answer with relevant examples, and proposing reasoned solutions in the light of what is expected of you (see the assessment criteria and learning outcomes below).

Any assertions you make must be backed up with relevant, correctly referenced examples throughout.

Do not merely give your own unsubstantiated opinions, or simply copy out sections from secondary sources, whether cited or uncited, as this is academic misconduct, and you will be heavily penalised if you do this.

Your assignment is to be word-processed using Word, and the style required is as follows: 1.5 spacing, Trebuchet MS 12 point, fully justifed text, page numbering centre bottom, 3cm space on all sides. This is set up in the template provided, which also includes line numbering. Use bold and 14 point for headings. Double return for new paragraphs, do not indent. Use the Harvard referencing system.

A word count must be included, otherwise the tutor’s estimate of the word count will be final. Your assignment is to be of 3,000 words, + / – 10%. This excludes your references section and any appendices. You are strongly advised to keep a computer copy of your submission should the need arise.

Please remember that your assignment will be made available to other students on the course in an anonymised form for their benefit.

All submissions must be made via Turnitin on the myCourse site for EUR158 using the template provided. Make sure you submit your essay to the correct place!
