The Gender Inequality in Sports

The Gender Inequality in Sports
Sports is vital in many respects. It goes without saying that taking exercises can build up physical strength. A research by Sitkowski, shows, that active participation in sports has a positive influence on a woman’s social life, self-esteem and even academic performance (2008).As noted in myprivateresearcher.com, there is no doubt that sports are beneficial for all genders the benefits such as the desire for freedom is the nature of people, however; people actually are in the pursuit of equality that they are allowed to fairly participate in activities such as economic activities, social activities and so on. Ultimately, they chase for equality in sport activities. In addition, sex difference in sports is unfair and not good for the development of women’s sport.

In the article “Why professional women’s sport is less popular than men’s,” by K.S.C (2012) illustrates a wide and longstanding phenomenon which is the professional women’s sport is much less popular than the male sports. The author concludes three major factors of this situation, which are “a balance of consumer, media and commercial appeal”. As a matter of fact, if there are more sponsorships and equally occupational exposures as men have, then women’s sports would be more well-known. However, the reality of the current situation is completely upside down. According to the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, the coverage of women’s sports in television is 7% of the television sports coverage, and the total value of all commercial sponsorships is only 0.4$ (p.1). In other words, the spectacle rolls as a snowball which becomes big and bigger as it goes on. For example, viewers prefer to watch men sports, and sponsors favor in the best athletes. Due to the shortage of sponsorship, there are many female athletes who have to struggle for living besides training, even though they are presented as national athletes. Women athletes get paid less than their male colleagues. For instance, if the Golfers’ Association provides $256m in prize money, in contrast; the women’s association offers only $50m. This situation demonstrates that sex difference in sports is exist, and it makes women athletes bad off.
As noted in myprivateresearcher.com, another critical view concluded by Madison (2012), in his argument, he addresses that women’s sports get much less airtime than men’s; the reason is “media coverage, or lack thereof.” (p.1) Collegiate athletes go through the same routine every day, and they have the same commitment in sport, regardless of their genders. Disappointingly, the exceptions of watching collegiate women’s sports on TV is that are there is no men’s games at that time or teams are ranked top in collegiate women’s sport. Then Hartman uses the statistic from the University of Southern California Center for Feminist Research to demonstrate the phenomenon, which the percentage of women’s sports broadcasted decreases from 6.5% to 1.6% between 2004 and 2008. (p. 2) Therefore, the author suggests that women’s sports are needed to be on live television and women’s athletes need to stick with their sports at a high competitive level. Then, live coverage of the women sports would be good for the development of women’s sport because those women athletes are the role models for next generation.
Although the situation of women sports is unequal compare to men’s, some people may agree it is the nature of human bodies, and the physical abilities between men and women are instinctive. As a result, women get used to relieveful pastimes, instead of sport activities. Alice Dredger (2014), a professor of clinical medical humanities and bioethics at Northwestern University, states “The reason we have females separated in sports is because in many sports, the best female athletes can’t compete with the male athletes.” Or for example, there are a female and a male tennis player at same rank who play a competition together. The female player has a tiny chance to win because of her biological abilities; a man player can easily hit the ball harder than the woman can. Therefore, the authors conclude that physical structures are the key reason that women’s sport is less popular. This argument maybe sounds reasonable at first, but it is not true (Hartman, 2012). Sport is not only for competition purpose; sport is far more than that. Competition is necessary to ensure women’s equality in sports.
Discriminating against men and women accessing the wide variety of sporting activities would be wrong.
