Having been born from an immigrant family who were not of Jewish ancestry, Arthur Miller was a potential victim for the mistreatment of the United States Administration on people who were in favor of communism under the rule of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. During this period, the accusations of communist cultures were at its peak. Anyone was likely to be accused of supporting communist culture with or without proof. At the age of thirty seven years, Arthur Miller felt that he was likely to be accused of the same belief by the United States Congress. This is evidenced when he failed to name a great number of people he thought were engaged in communist practices.

Why Arthur Miller wrote `The Crucible’
During the hearing in which he appeared with his wife Marylyn Monroe during which he was supposed to answer questions regarding his political activities, he failed to name a number of his colleagues whom he thought to be involved in Communist activities. Since he wanted to protect his career of Journalism and play writing and also inform the people about lack of information by the government, he decides to write the play ‘the crucible’. The writing of this article was also inspired by the fact that he witnessed a number of his associates being persecuted as is seen in Hollywood (Mandala 74). As a result, he decided to make a political statement based on a past witch trial In this article, he used the episodes of ‘Salem Witch Trial’ in which the characters are as well involved in similar ordeals that faced people during the reign of McCarthy.
Firstly, there are a number of factors that caused the emergence of anti-communist movements that were highly felt in 1950’s at the time when Miller came up with the play ‘The Crucible’. There were extreme fears in the US concerning the presence of Communist Americans and people who tolerated communist culture in the filming industry. People who were accused of such beliefs were taken before the congress for investigation. There were a number of consequences which followed such investigations such as loss of job, loss of reputation in one’s career or even jail as well as loss of public image.
This paper also tries to reveal Miller’s observations of growing hysteria in the late 1040’s and 1950’s about Communist fears. He was also triggered to address the plight of innocent victims who were offered up for sacrifice without being given a chance to prove their innocence. By writing ‘The Crucible’, Miller believed that he would protect entertainers and other professionals such as academics and scientists from being persecuted due to their inability to defend themselves well from participating in Communist activities. A number of reasons why Miller wrote this play have been explained in detail in this article.
Purpose Statement
Human history is characterized by neighbors being bitter against them and lives of innocent people face destruction. Why Arthur Miller wrote `The Crucible’ in Such a case took place in the U.S in 1962 and 1950s. In 1950s, Senator John McCarthy resolved that communists would be hunted soon after his election into the senate. There are a number of similarities between McCarthy witch hunt and Salem witch hunt such as the same origin, interrogation methods, societal consequences and the conclusions. There was fear in McCarthy rule as in Salem. Due to fear of Sen. McCarthy that he would be defeated in the coming election for a position in the U.S Senate, he decided to explain that he knew 57 of his opponents who were communists (Wilks 88). Furthermore, some girls were afraid of performing a dance in Salem due to fear that they would be linked to witchcraft. To find a solution to their problems McCarthy and Salem girls resolved to accuse people whom they thought were involved in the issues in their lives. They hoped that their beliefs would make people afraid of them and give them power to get rid of their fears. McCarthy believed that when he declared that he would not accept communism, he would be re-elected to the Senate.
In Salem, the aim of the conspiracy of witches was to destroy the rule of the church, or Christianity, consequently, Salem girls accused people of being witches. Due to the accusations by McCarthy and Salem girls, communist hunt began in Salem. The play ‘The Crucible’ is a similar reflection of the occurrences in Salem and witch hunt by McCarthy administration. In this article, a number of girls are involved in witch craft while the court was aiming at making them agree that they were actually witches so that they could be freed. The playwright wrote the play based on the occurrences in Salem and the attitude of McCarthy administration on communists. This article tries to show the similarities between the activities of anti-communism and the reaction of the court against characters in the play ‘The Crucible’
